EMB CONTEMPORARY – 7434 W. MCNICHOLS, DETROIT 48221
One of the city’s newest art spaces, EMB Contemporary believes that the true value of an artist lies in the uniqueness of their journey. Led and operated by Detroit artist, Tzu Poré, the gallery honors and celebrates the individuality of every artist, understanding that their merit is not solely defined by academic achievements.
EMB recognizes that artistic talent can emerge at any stage of life and is committed to nurturing this talent as it grows. The gallery holds that the self-taught artist, who dedicates themselves to mastering their craft with passion and perseverance, is equally significant as the formally educated artist. Celebrating each artist’s unique journey, EMB Contemporary is dedicated to creating a space where each artist’s lifelong commitment to artistic growth is nurtured and celebrated.
HAIR IS THE GARDEN WE WEAR
OPENING RECEPTION: FEBRUARY 27, 2026
6:15 – 9 PM

HAIR IS THE GARDEN WE WEAR™ positions Black hair not as symbol, but as
infrastructure — a system of memory, lineage, cosmology, and material intelligence.
Through hair, cotton, fiber, tufting, pulp, dirt, and mixed media, the exhibition
interrogates the infrastructures that have shaped Black life: land, labor, lineage, and legacy.
Curator Tzu Poré frames the exhibition as “legacy architecture” — a material and
conceptual blueprint for Black future‑building.
“Hair is the first architecture we inherit,” says Poré. “It grows from us, but it also precedes us — carrying DNA, memory, ritual, and cosmology. This exhibition is a study in Black material intelligence.”
