LIBERAL ARTS GALLERY – 3361 GRATIOT AVE – DETROIT 48207 – CURRENTLY CLOSED

Detroit mourns and celebrates the life of Duane Belin, the owner of Detroit’s spacious and intimate Liberal Arts Gallery. Duane was a friend to everyone in the business, and an avid collector, enthusiast and supporter of the arts. The gallery is currently closed to the public.
Serving on Detroit’s east side, Liberal Arts officially opened in the late 1980s, with the help of artists. In a 2023 Canvas Rebel article, Duane said these artists ‘gave their hearts to him’ to open the space. The gallery endured financial and political challenges faced by the city and throughout all, Duane gave many creatives a launchpad to develop programming and build practices at his space. A unique venue designed to accommodate visual art, music, and a variety of performing arts and special events, the gallery boasts two levels with a balcony over-looking the main gallery floor. Duane, and his generous smile, are truly missed by the Detroit art community.
